Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy in Layton and Salt Lake City, UT

Our hormones are silent workhorses in our bodies, regulating most of our systems. They act as chemical messengers, coordinating everything from fertility to moods to metabolism. Aging can create a decline in hormone production. This is especially true after a woman goes through menopause. Declining hormones are behind those annoying hot flashes and weight gains.

At Dr. Jensen’s, we provide bioidentical hormone replacement therapy using plant-based hormones. This therapy returns a woman’s hormone levels to the optimal range and can make a big difference in how you feel day today.

What Are Bioidentical Hormones?

You may have heard of hormone replacement using synthetic estrogen and others. That’s not the path Dr. Jensen has chosen for our patients. We use bioidentical hormones that are chemically identical to those your body produces. They are derived from plant estrogens. The common hormones that are matched are estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone.

Am I A Good Candidate For Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy?

Hormone replacement isn’t right for everyone. If you’re experiencing some of the symptoms of hormone imbalance, we run a comprehensive blood panel at Dr. Jensen’s. If you’re struggling with the symptoms of perimenopause, menopause, or post-menopause, bioidentical hormone replacement could be a good option.

But some patients aren’t right for these treatments. If you have or have had breast cancer, ovarian cancer, endometrial cancer, blood clots in your legs or lungs, stroke, liver disease, or some forms of vaginal bleeding, you should not have hormone replacement therapy.

Also, if you aren’t having problems with menopausal symptoms and if you started menopause after age 45, you do not need hormone replacement therapy to maintain your health. We can discuss other options for addressing potential osteoporosis and heart disease if you have some risk factors.

Is Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy Safe? What Are The Risks And Side Effects?

These are generally safe treatments, but they are not for everyone, as mentioned above. We run a comprehensive blood panel prior to putting any of our patients on this therapy.

Hormone therapy of any kind does increase the risk for certain conditions and diseases. Risks and potential for side effects tend to vary among women depending upon their health history. These include:

  • Blood clots
  • Stroke
  • Gallbladder disease
  • Heart disease
  • Breast cancer

Patients may experience some side effects, especially at the beginning of bioidentical hormone replacement therapy as their body adjusts to the hormones. These are common side effects:

  • Acne
  • Bloating
  • Weight gain
  • Fatigue
  • Mood swings
  • Increased facial hair

How Are Bioidentical Hormones Delivered?

At Dr. Jensen’s, we offer different options for delivering your bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. These include:

  • Creams
  • Injections
  • Implanted pellets
  • Patches
  • Gels

Dr. Jensen will discuss with you which form would best fit your lifestyle. Once you begin treatment, we’ll need to monitor your hormone levels to evaluate how your body is responding. We aim to use the lowest levels of a hormone that produces results.

What Kind Of Results Can I Expect From Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy?

We use bioidentical hormone replacement therapy for our patients whose hormone levels have dropped due to perimenopause or menopause. This increases the levels of the hormones that have dropped and can provide improvement for all of these typical menopause issues:

  • Hot flashes
  • Night sweats
  • Mood changes
  • Memory loss
  • Weight gain
  • Sleep issues
  • Loss of interest in sex or pain during sex

Hormone replacement therapy may also reduce a woman’s risk for diabetes, tooth loss, and cataracts. There is some evidence that is can also improve skin thickness, hydration, and elasticity.

How Many Treatments Do You Need?

There is not a set amount or duration of bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. Dr. Jensen adjusts these treatments for each patient based on their bloodwork. Our goal is to use the lowest effective dose for the shortest amount of time needed to treat your symptoms. This varies with every patient.

How Often Will I Need To Replace My Patch Or Another Method?

Each of the delivery options has different durations. For instance, bioidentical hormone replacement pellets are placed under the skin just above the buttocks and they last from 3-4 months. Patches are often worn for 3 weeks and then removed for 1 week. Pills and gels are usually used daily.

During your consultation, Dr. Jensen will discuss the best method that could fit your lifestyle. He’ll detail the duration and the risks involved.
