CoolSculpting®

What Is CoolSculpting®?

CoolSculpting® is a new, exciting, non-surgical way to reduce stubborn fat! The CoolSculpting® procedure is safe and effective, without surgery or downtime. This fat reduction treatment is the only FDA-cleared procedure to use controlled cooling to safely target and significantly reduce diet and exercise-resistant fat. CoolSculpting® results are noticeable and lasting. We can help you look great from every angle.

How does CoolSculpting® work? It comes down to a science. Fat cells freeze at higher temperatures than surrounding tissues. CoolSculpting® technology delivers precisely controlled cooling to gently and effectively target the fat cells underneath the skin. The treated fat cells are crystallized (frozen), and then die. This allows your body to, over time, natural process and flush these dead cells, leaving a more sculpted you.

Dr. Jensen and his staff will work with you to develop a customized fat reduction treatment plan that addresses problem areas, such as legs, arms, flanks, bellies, and even faces! Additional sessions may further enhance your results. Individualized treatment plans are tailored to your body, your goals, and your budget.

What’s The Difference Between Liposuction And CoolSculpting®?

Liposuction is a body contouring surgical procedure, although Dr. Jensen’s laser liposuction is minimally invasive. In liposuction, a cannula (a wand with suction) is inserted under the skin in the target area and it suctions out unwanted fat. Because the cannula needs to be moved about a bit under the skin, this causes some bleeding and subsequent bruising. This isn’t to the degree that it was when liposuction was first introduced in the 1980s, but there is some recovery needed with liposuction, and there will be some swelling. If a person has blood-clotting problems, they cannot have liposuction. Liposuction is more expensive than CoolSculpting®. It also carries a risk of infection and some complications because it is a surgical procedure.

CoolSculpting® is also a body-contouring procedure as described above. But there are no incisions to introduce a cannula and there isn’t any recovery time. CoolSculpting® is completely non-invasive, so there isn’t any risk of infection or other issues that come with surgical procedures. CoolSculpting® is usually less expensive than liposuction.

Both liposuction and CoolSculpting® are not meant as weight-loss options. They are meant for people who are at or near their ideal body weight and have stubborn pockets of fat that are highly resistant to dietary changes and exercise. Dr. Jensen performs both procedures at our Layton office. He can discuss which he feels better suits your particular needs during your consultation.

Benefits Of CoolSculpting®

The human body is excellent at storing fat in certain areas. This is a nod to our caveman ancestors who never knew when their next real meal would come. Today, some of that fat is almost impossible to get rid of with changes in diet and exercise. How’d you like to be able to get rid of those areas without surgery or any recovery?

It is the world’s most popular body sculpting procedure with over six million people have had these treatments since the FDA first approved CoolSculpting® in 2010. These treatments remove from 20-23 percent of the fat in the treatment areas, and they do this without a single incision or any downtime.

Plus, the FDA continues to approve new areas where it can be used. Currently, the FDA has approved it for these eight areas:

  • Abdomen
  • Thighs
  • Back fat
  • Bra line fat
  • Flanks
  • Underneath the buttocks
  • Double chin
  • Upper arms

Bottom line? CoolSculpting slims your contour at areas across your body without any downtime or recovery, and who couldn’t get rid of a pocket of fat here or there?

Candidate For CoolSculpting®

CoolSculpting®

First things first — Dr. Jensen wants patients to know that is not a weight-loss procedure. It is a non-invasive body sculpting procedure. The ideal candidates are at or very near their ideal body weight but are irritated by stubborn pockets of body fat in areas where CoolSculpting® is approved for use — the abdomen, thighs, back fat, bra line fat, flanks, underneath the buttocks, double chins, and the upper arms. It freezes and destroys up to one-quarter of the fat in these areas and the skin then slims down over the smaller contours.

CoolSculpting® Procedure

When you come to Dr. Jensen’s for a session, there’s no need for any local anesthetic or pain relief. You simply sit in our angled treatment chair and we position the CoolSculpting panels over the treatment area. The panels produce light suction that draws the skin, underlying tissue, and fat up between the two cooling panels. We then set the temperature to the freezing point of the fat cells and deliver that cooling down into the drawn up skin and tissue. The fat cells freeze and the body begins the process of eliminating them. As the session progresses, we repeat this process several times across the treatment area. A total session takes from one to three hours, depending on the size of the treatment areas. You can do whatever you like while the CoolSculpting panels give your fat the cold shoulder — read, watch Netflix, work on your laptop, even take a nap.

Over time, once 20-25 percent of the fat in the area is gone, the remaining fat cells condense down into a thinner layer and your contour slims.

What Does CoolSculpting® Feel Like?

There are two main sensations involved in a session at Dr. Jensen’s. The first is a pulling sensation in the treatment area. This happens when the CoolSculpting® panels (there are now five different sizes to adapt to different areas) apply suction to draw the skin and underlying fat layer of the skin up onto the cooling panels. It’s not painful, simply a feeling of pulling.

The second sensation is one of intense cold. When the panels begin to deliver the cold down into your skin, the feeling is quite cold. This passes in a few minutes as the area becomes numb. Again, this isn’t painful, just really cold.

How Does CoolSculpting Reduce Unwanted Fat?

It's simple. Fat cells freeze at higher temperatures than surrounding tissues. The CoolSculpting device sets fat cells up for natural destruction. During a treatment session, which may last about 45 minutes, the targeted fat is brought to a precise temperature at which crystals form inside of the fat cells. Crystallized fat cells are perceived as damaged, so the body naturally focuses on removing them. The damaged fat cells are picked up by the lymph and disposed of just like other unnecessary elements processed by the lymphatic system. CoolSculpting technology delivers precisely controlled cooling to gently and effectively target the fat cells underneath the skin. The treated fat cells are crystallized (frozen), and then die. This allows your body to, over time, natural process and flush these dead cells, leaving a more sculpted you.

How Many CoolSculpting Sessions Will it Take Before I See Results?

You can expect to begin seeing results from your CoolSculpting commitment after one to three months. This may depend on the area we're treating and, honestly, just how your body responds. In general, this timeline is what has been seen across many case studies. The number of sessions you'll need will also depend on the area you want us to focus on. For example, your double chin or the backs of your arms may look more sculpted with just one or two treatments. Your thighs or abdomen may take up to six sessions to acheive the most gratifying results. Your provider will estimate the number of sessions you may need to see your desired outcome, and will explain to you what to expect along the way!

CoolSculpting Recovery

The CoolSculpting fat-freezing procedure is completely non-surgical, so you can typically return to work and normal activities immediately.

Results Of CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting freezes fat cells in the target areas. The crystallized cells die and the body removes them through the lymphatic system, as it does with other waste products. Although the fat cells are destroyed, it takes a few weeks for the body to fully remove them from the body and for your skin and support tissues to slim down to their new contours. Your results keep improving for up to six months as the body removes the dead fat cells.

These are permanent changes. The fat cells removed with CoolSculpting are gone forever. As long as you maintain a healthy weight, you’ll enjoy your slimmer contours forevermore.

Do CoolSculpting Treatments Hurt?

As mentioned above, the sensations of pulling when the panels draw up the skin of the treatment area and of intense cold when the panels deliver the freezing that will kill the fat cells are strong, but not painful.

When your treatment is complete, we massage the area to return feeling and blood flow. This is not painful either.

Side Effects Of CoolSculpting

Is it safe? CoolSculpting at Dr. Jensen’s practice is a completely non-invasive procedure. After their session, patients usually have some temporary redness, swelling, bruising, and skin sensitivity at the treatment site. There can also be stinging and cramping. These sensations are caused by your skin reacting to the intense cold, but they pass within a few days at most. We have not found these sensations to keep our patients from returning to their normal routines or activities.

Although very rare, more serious side effects such as extreme pain, severe numbing, and bloating along the area of contact with the cooling panels are possible.

The FDA approved CoolSculpting first for the flanks in 2010. Over the subsequent years, the FDA has approved subsequent areas, adding back fat, bra line fat, and fat underneath the buttocks in 2016. This would not happen if the FDA were receiving complaints from consumers. Unlike liposuction, the procedure doesn’t involve incisions, insertion of a cannula, or anesthesia. It is completely non-invasive.
