Laser Hair removal: throw out the razors.
What Is It?
Dealing with unwanted hair is such an endless chore. You shave, wax, pluck, or apply harsh depilatory creams and the hair is gone…until it’s back in two or three weeks! And then you get to repeat the whole process again.
Or, you could come to Dr. Jensen’s and have us perform laser hair removal to permanently get rid of up to 90 percent of your unwanted hair. We have the training and experience that will comfortably deliver the hair removal you want for the long term.
The key to laser hair removal is melanin. Melanin is what gives your hair (and your skin) its color. We set the wavelength of our laser to match the melanin in your hair. The laser light is then delivered in very short pulses onto the skin and unwanted hair. The melanin in the hair absorbs the matching light energy and it instantly converts to heat. This heat then travels down the hair shaft into the follicle, where the hair is anchored and growing. The heat damages or destroys the hair follicle and the follicle is no longer able to grow hair.
Laser Hair Removal Consultation
Through your initial consultation, Dr. Jensen will discuss the procedure and determine the best laser procedure to perform. Lasers are focused to a spot-by-spot area of treatment. Light hits each hair follicle and the pigment absorbs the beam, disabling any new active-growth. Hair removal is a convenient and noninvasive procedure that, based on your personal treatment option, can give permanent results. Be assured, our health care professionals deliver conscientious and thorough attention. Laser hair removal is effective and will leave your skin feeling smooth and silky.
Where Can I Have LHR?
It’s easy to think of lasers and sci-fi movies, but the energy used for laser hair removal doesn’t harm your skin or your body. It’s been proven to be completely safe for over 30 years now, and the lasers keep getting even better. You can have laser hair removal performed basically anywhere on your body, with the exception of the nostrils, inside the ears, and the male genitalia.
The most popular areas are the bikini line, the underarms, the upper lip, the back, the sideburns, and the legs. Some men do their entire chest, and some even opt to target their beard area.
A Truly Permanent Procedure?
Laser hair removal is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the U.S. every year for one reason — it works at removing hair. The FDA has approved lasers for “permanent hair reduction.” That’s because it’s almost impossible to remove every one of your unwanted hairs. Why? Two reasons.
First, every one of the five million or so hairs on the average human (men have a few hundred thousand more than women) operates like an independent contractor. Each hair follicle moves in and out of the three phases of the hair growth cycle — anagen (growth), catagen (transitional), and telogen (resting). Laser energy is only effective in damaging or destroying hair follicles that are in the growth phase because the hair is actively growing and strongly anchored in the hair follicle. In the catagen and telogen phases, the hair is already on its way out as the body is in the process of shedding it. The hair is no longer receiving any nourishment from the follicle and it may have already separated from the follicle. This is why laser energy applied to hairs in these phases can’t get down into the follicle. When you think of the number of unwanted hairs you’re seeking to target, catching each unwanted hair in the growth phase isn’t easy.
Second, damaged follicles can rebuild sometimes with hormonal changes, and partially damaged follicles can heal and begin to grow hair again.
So, how much hair can you permanently get rid of? It’s from 85 to 90 percent in the treatment areas.
Does it hurt to have laser hair removal?
We apply topical numbing cream to the treatment areas prior to your session. Plus, our laser has a cooling function in the head. Most patients equate the feeling to that of a small rubber band being snapped lightly against the skin, followed by a cooling sensation.
How many treatments do I need to remove the hair?
Remember, the game is to catch as many hairs in the growth phase as possible. To do this, multiple sessions are necessary. At Dr. Jensen’s, we find that between six and 10 treatments achieve the degree of hair reduction that pleases most patients. From there, a yearly maintenance visit cleans up more hairs and any follicles that have healed and restarted hair growth.
Some people assume the laser vaporizes the hair instantly, but the energy used is way too low for that. When you return home after your session at Dr. Jensen’s, you’ll still see your unwanted hair, and your skin will be slightly red. The hairs are not instantly gone, as with waxing or depilatory creams. But the vehicle for their growth is now damaged or destroyed. Without the follicle to anchor them, the hairs will begin to fall out over the following days. You need to be patient and not pluck or scrub the hairs to accelerate their falling out. Let them do it on their timeframe.
After a few days, you’ll notice a disconcerting thing — what looks like new hair growth on the treatment area. Not to worry. This is a sign that the laser energy was successful in zapping the follicles. Hair that was down below the skin in the follicles is being pushed out and shed. That is what you’re seeing.
Remember, not all of the hair in the treatment area will fall out. The hair that was in the growth phase will, but other hairs that weren’t will still be there. Usually, the affected hair will be about 20 percent of the total during that session. That’s why multiple sessions are necessary — to catch more and more hair in the growth phase.
Laser hair removal has proven to be reliable, effective, and safe. Lasers have been used for laser hair removal for almost 30 years, and the process was extensively tested prior to becoming commercially available. The most common side effects after treatment include skin irritation, such as redness and slight swelling on the treatment sites. This usually passes within a few hours.
Since the laser energy targets the melanin in the hair, light hair isn’t as responsive to laser energy. For that reason, removing blonde or white hair is not as successful as darker hair.
