For better or worse, vaginal rejuvenation isn’t usually a topic of everyday conversation. Of course, nothing’s off limits for the Kardashians. Last year on her reality show Khloe Kardashian couldn’t stop talking about a vaginal “laser” treatment she had called ThermiVa.
Well, not exactly. She had the name right, but the energy wrong. ThermiVa is a non-invasive vaginal tightening procedure, but it uses radiofrequency energy to achieve the skin tightening results, not the light energy supplied by lasers.
Dr. Jensen offers ThermiVa treatments at his Layton, Utah practice.
Why vaginal rejuvenation?
A woman’s tissues in her vagina can become relaxed after vaginal childbirth and due to simple aging. This laxity can diminish sensation during intercourse, reduce sexual satisfaction, and affect relationships. Vaginal rejuvenation can tighten the vaginal tissues back up.
How does ThermiVa work?
Like in all skin, collagen is the key. When radiofrequency energy is applied into the dermis, the skin’s second layer, the body responds as if wounded, producing more collagen to “heal” the wound. When existing collagen is heated, the molecules contract, remodeling and reorganizing the molecular network, both tightening the skin and encouraging new collagen to be produced.
The procedure
With ThermiVa, a small wand applicator is used to deliver the radiofrequency energy both to the interior walls of the vagina and to the external labia and other tissues. The wand delivers a warm feeling to the vaginal tissues, but it is not painful at all. This energy delivery is non-invasive and there isn’t any downtime. But once delivered, it immediately begins tightening the interior and exterior tissues. The effects last for around two years, at which point the ThermiVa procedure can be done again.
