Dr. Jensen and Da Vinci

Robotic technology equipment machine arm surgeon in futuristic operation room. Many of our patients from Layton and across the Salt Lake Valley have no idea Dr. Jensen, who is board certified in general surgery, performs various gastrointestinal surgeries in addition to our cosmetic surgery procedures. In fact, Dr. Jensen is the premier gastrointestinal surgeon in Utah.

For these procedures, Dr. Jensen uses robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgical methods whenever possible. For these, he employs the da Vinci Surgical System.

What Gastrointestinal Procedures Does Dr. Jensen Perform?

As an experienced gastrointestinal surgeon, Dr. Jensen performs these procedures:

  • Colorectal surgery
  • Gallstone surgery
  • Gastrointestinal surgery
  • GI tract surgery
  • Hernia surgery
  • Laparoscopic gallbladder surgery

The da Vinci Surgical System

The da Vinci Surgical System gives Dr. Jensen an advanced set of instruments to use when performing robotic-assisted minimally invasive procedures. Dr. Jensen was the first general surgeon in Utah to operate with the da Vinci system. He also proctors other surgeons on robotic surgery methods.

People are confused by the term “robotic.” The more important term is “assisted,” as that is what the robotics are doing — they are assisting the surgeon, Dr. Jensen. Robots don’t perform the surgery, Dr. Jensen performs the surgery and the robotic instrumentation responds to his movements.

The da Vinci system translates Dr. Jensen’s hand movements at the console in real time, bending and rotating the instruments during the surgery. The advantage is that the tiny wristed instruments move like a human hand, but with a greater range of motion. The da Vinci system also delivers highly magnified, 3D high-def views of the surgical area. These are far more detailed than can be glimpsed with an unaided human eye. Plus, the da Vinci Surgical System uses smaller instruments than a human hand would require, and this enables Dr. Jensen to operate with robotic assist through one or a few very small incisions.

Three Parts

The da Vinci Surgical System has three parts:

  1. Surgeon Console — Dr. Jensen sits at the console, controlling the instruments while viewing the surgical area in high-def 3D.
  2. Patient Cart — Positioned alongside the bed, the patient cart holds the camera and instruments that Dr. Jensen controls from the console.
  3. Vision Cart — The vision cart makes communication between components possible and supports the 3D high-definition vision system.
