Breast augmentation with implants has been the most popular cosmetic surgery in the U.S. over the past five years, but some of Dr. Jensen’s patients don’t like the idea of having artificial implants placed in their chest.
For these patients, Dr. Jensen offers breast augmentation through fat transfer. While not able to change breast size to the same degree as when using implants, fat transfer provides our patients an all-natural enhancement that looks and feels completely natural.
What is fat transfer?
Clinically called “autologous fat transfer,” the process simply takes fat from an unwanted area, such as the lower abdomen, purifies it and then the purified fat is injected into an area where the patient wants to add volume, in this case the breasts.
The problem with fat transfer has always been the amount of fat that permanently “takes.” This means the fat cells acquire their own blood supply and become permanent in their new location. In the past, fat transfer has been inconsistent, with much of the problem coming from the way the fat cells were handled both during liposuction and when being purified. This meant that many of the fat cells wouldn’t successful “take” when transferred. This made for up to 40 percent loss of the re-injected fat. Because of this, results were hard to predict.
But everything changed in March of this year with the introduction of injectables and fillers. In this closed system, Dr. Jensen (who is the only doctor in Utah with the BeautiFill™ system) is allowed to be much more selective with the fat taken. Plus, the system removes less blood and oil than typical manual liposuction for fat transfer. BeautiFill™ has an average viability of its fat cells of 95.7% compared with 79.7% with manual liposuction and processing.
Fat transfer for augmentation
Once Dr. Jensen has taken the fat and the BeautiFill™ system has purified it, it’s then a relatively simple procedure to strategically place this fat throughout the breasts. This is done through a series of small injections of fat placed throughout the breasts.
