A double when you’re at a Bees game is a good thing. Under your jawline, double is a dirty word.
Short of surgery, there really wasn’t much anyone could do about a double chin, but that all changed a couple years back with the debut of a prescription injection called Kybella. Kybella® delivers amazing results, and Dr. Jensen offers it for his patients.
Double chins hang around, literally
Most of us like to think that it’s only other people who have a little junk going on under the chin. In reality, most of us have some business going on below our jaw. If you’d rather, call it submental fullness. That’s the clinical term for “double chin” and it somehow seems less intrusive!
It’s interesting that the aesthetic industry has paid little attention to the dreaded double chin. The only way you could do anything about a double chin was to have a facelift or a neck lift.
That has changed with Kybella®, a prescription medicine available from Dr. Jensen. Kybella® is the prescription brand name for an injection formulated with deoxycholic acid that dramatically improves the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin, the proverbial double chin.
You’re not alone with that double chin
Double chins are about as rare in Utah as Chuck-a-Rama. The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery conducted a survey in 2015 and found that 67% of people said they’re bothered by a double chin. Those people in the survey were as annoyed by their double chin as they were about wrinkles and other signs of aging.
Aging and sagging skin go together like Lagoon and Colossus. There are a variety of factors that play a part: the pull of gravity, simple intrinsic aging (where decreasing production of collagen means the skin has less underlying support), genetics (some people simply have looser skin below the jawline), and weight gain. All of these factors cause our skin to droop.
Kybella® to the rescue
In April 2015 the FDA approved Kybella®, the only injectable treatment to improve the appearance and profile of a double chin. The basis of Kybella® is deoxycholic acid. Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring molecule in the body whose job is to aid in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into the fat beneath the chin, Kybella® (and its deoxycholic acid) destroys the fat cells. After those cells are gone, there is no longer a storage mechanism to accumulate fat in the area. So your double chin shouldn’t return!
Two to six treatments
The FDA has approved Kybella for up to six injection sessions. How many you need depends on how much fat you have under your chin and other variables. Some of our Kybella patients see the results they want after two to four treatments; others require six. Each treatment is spaced four weeks apart. The main side effect with Kybella® is swelling at the injection sites, but that resolves pretty quickly.
